They are alright but the included drain plug is terrible, and the black part sues crap sealant

So buy, undo black part with the 5mm (before fitting to car) use new silicone to seal it and lightly tighten, then leave for a bit and tighten all the way.

Swap the drain plug for one of the following part nos:

– N 908 560 01
– N 910 868 01
– N 908 560 02
– N 911 806 01

These can be purchased from eBay for relatively cheap, and typically come with a copper crush washer to seal.
One of them uses an allen to tighten, the others are Torx fittings.

I’ve used this method to replace a number of engines with shallow sumps, and have not had one leak or fail yet (sometimes they will leak right out of the box because of poor silicone sealing or a poor quality drain plug, so best practice is to re-do those elements)

Regarding fitting a shallow sump to a 4 cylinder engine such as a 1.8t, 2.0 or 1.9. The pickup pipe will often hit the bottom of the pan. This is dangerous because in the event of an impact on the sump, there is potential for the pickup pipe to break, split or become damaged; and impede oil flow to the engine which can result in low oil pressure and engine damage.

Best practice is to swap the oil pickup with a shallow version, part no as follows:

– 06A 115 251
– 06A 115 251G

There is also the option of lightly bending the existing pickup tube (with or without heat) moving it approximately 6-7mm upwards (or until the sump fits without touching; you can put something small inside the pan when offering up to check the clearance. I have bent a number of these pickups without issue as it makes the £30-40 shallow sump become more expensive with a £10-20 tube, sealant and a drain plug.

This is arguably one of the cheapest ways to acquire a shallow sump, and in my experience leads to no issues.

My current shallow sump has endured 30k miles, with plenty of hits and dents, and has not leaked, touched the pickup or had a problem.
